Lifeline is a federal program that lowers the monthly cost of phone or internet service. Many participating carriers also include a smartphone at no cost when you enroll.
You qualify through a benefit program
If you or someone in your household takes part in one of these programs, you can usually qualify for Lifeline:
- SNAP (food stamps)
- Medicaid
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA)
- Veterans Pension or Survivors Pension
- Certain Tribal programs, if you live on Tribal lands
You qualify through income
You can also qualify if your household income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. The exact amount depends on how many people live in your home.
What you’ll need
- A government photo ID
- Proof of your benefit (a letter or card) or proof of income, such as a tax return or pay stubs
- Your home address
How much you can save
Lifeline gives a monthly discount on one phone or internet service per household. With many carriers, that discount covers the whole plan, so the service costs nothing each month.
